Sumo Citrus: Enormously Good!
Every week since the end of December, I have been furtively looking for the Sumo citrus at the grocery store and every time I have been disappointed, until today. Finally I spied the distinctive bulbous, citrus fruit meticulously wrapped in tissue and packed in cheery cardboard boxes. After purchasing 2 boxes (priced at $2 per fruit, but so worth it), I consumed one immediately as soon as I returned to the car. Like its namesake, Sumo citrus, it is known for its very large size and prominent "top knot." The peel is bright orange, bumpy and loose making it effortless to peel and most important, it is one of the sweetest, juiciest citrus I have every tasted. Over 40 years ago, a citrus grower in Kumamoto, Japan developed this fruit which combined the easy-to-peel Satsuma with the sweet oranges from California and now this variety is the most prized citrus fruit in Japan and Korea. Known as the Dekopon in Japan and Hallabong in Korea, a few select family farms are successfully growing the fruit in California's Central Valley and marketing it as the Sumo citrus. For the biggest, sweetest and completely seedless mandarin, the Sumo shoves all other citrus competitors out of contention. Visit www.sumocitrus.com for more information.
