Pinocchio Pachino
Today I was busy in the garden tending to my squash, melons and tomatoes - watering, trimming and harvesting - and as I gathered a bowlful of my Pachino tomatoes, to my surprise, there was one with a long proboscis! Since I am leaving for Italy tomorrow with my grandchildren, it is only fitting that I name this particular tomato, the Pinocchio Pachino. The Pachino is the world's most expensive tomato because the Sicilian government has established protective rights to it and seeds are almost impossible to obtain. Fortunately I was able to get some seeds and the "mother plant" over-wintered in my San Diego garden. It continues to bear clusters of sweet, cherry tomatoes that I use in salads and pasta dishes. I cannot tell a lie! Ciao for now until I return on the 19th.
