My Grumpy Scrub-Jay

Every time I visit my back yard vegetable garden, a particularly possessive scrub-jay flies overhead squawking at me for intruding on his private preserve. If I continue to putter, he will station himself on a tree stump just below my planting beds and scold me incessantly. He may dislike my company, but I enjoy his. Known for intelligence and mischievousness, I think the way he proudly struts showing off his brilliant blue plumage with gray and speckled white chest feathers must make him irresistable to the female bird population. The average lifespan of a Western Scrub-Jay is 9 years and I have heard that jays will take food out of your hand. Tomorrow, I will try to bribe him with nuts, seeds and berries and maybe, just maybe he'll accept my goody-filled hand as a sign of friendship.
