Bright Yellow Cymbidium
At the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show, my favorite orchid company is Fiori D'Amore (appropriately translated, "flower of love") owned by Paolo and Nina Di Candia. Over the years, despite my efforts to exercise self-restraint, I have spent much of my children's inheritance at their booth and hopefully, the family will understand about my unbridled passion for orchids.
For the past 5 weeks, one of my Fiori D'Amore purchases, Dos Pueblos Alba cymbidium, has continued to maintain 2 spikes laden with gorgeous flowers through unseasonable rains, winds and this week, 85 degree temperatures! Today I decided to cut the spikes and shared one with my neighbor who kept watch over our house during the week we were at an appearance at Chico and at the San Francisco Flower Show and kept one for myself to enjoy indoors. The designation of "alba" for certain cymbidiums means they lack the ability to make red pigment and as a result, the flowers are either crystal-clear white, pure yellow or sparkling green with no markings of red on the lips or on the back of sepals. Besides the stunning yellow hue of my Dos Pueblos Alba, the blossoms are huge, several as large as my hand, and they last outdoors much longer than my other cymbidiums. Aren't these perfectly justifiable reasons to continue my shopping sprees at Fiori d'Amori?
