Cold Snap Benefit

Even though I am a native of Illinois, I have lived in California all my adult life and am now a woose when it comes to inclement weather. For the past two weeks, our evening temperatures have dipped into the 40s and I have given up trying to weather the cold. The heater is now on at night to keep me toasty warm, but I noticed one particular garden plant that is loving the night-time chill. All of our cymbidium orchids have begun to push their flowering spikes up and it won't be too long before they will open up their clusters of lovely buds. It reminded me that cymbidiums don't spike until night temperatures dip into the 50s outdoors. If there is an extended winter frost, I bring them indoors in an area with bright light to protect them and to enjoy their gorgeous blossoms.
