Serendipity

Since our grandson Nicholas is an avid basketball player, his father took him to the basketball courts at Parco di Villa Revoltella, a lovely park on the outskirts of Trieste, Italy and overlooking the sparkling Adriatic ocean. It was where Baron Pasqual Revoltella built his villa in the 19th century, but now belongs to the community of Trieste. While Nicholas played basketball with his father, I strolled around the park grounds and was enchanted by the statue of Pinnochio, the walkway shaded with wisteria and the serendipitous discovery of a small rose garden.
Although many of the tags were lost, I was able to find a few remaining tags, including a lovely shrub rose bred by an American, N. J. Hansen and introduced by Bobbink & Atkins in 1938. Although Bobbink & Atkins and N.J. Hansen are long gone, I was admiring their pink blended rose, the Hon. Lady Lindsey and grateful that their efforts to produce this rose still exists in even a faraway place as Trieste. Hopefully, their horticultural legacy will live on and on in gardens and in parks such as the Parco di Villa Revoltella.

  1. Sorry, I was jet lagged and misspelled Hansen's rose: it is Hon Lady Lindsay with an "a" not an "e" Sharon
