Did You Know?

National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April to encourage tree planting and care. It was founded by newspaper editor and secretary of the Nebraska territory, J. Sterling Morton in 1872.
Other states began observing Arbor Day and by 1882, the tradition extended nationwide in schools. Today, the National Arbor Day Foundation continues his legacy and belief that "each generation takes the earth as trustees". Last year, foundation members of Arbor Day planted 8 million trees. 7 REASONS TO PLANT TREES
  • To conserve energy; may cut air conditioning costs by 15-35%
  • To help clear the air by producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
  • To provide havens for songbirds
  • To increase home values by 15% or more
  • To keep the soil in place and reduce polluted runoff into waterways
  • To conserve energy in the winter by slowing cold winter winds
  • To help mark the changing seasons
